Troop 1 serves the youth of Madison CT and surrounding communities out of our rustic (and palatial) headquarters, American Legion Hall, Post 79 on Bradley Road next to the senior center, the three churches and a stone’s throw from the center of town. We are very fortunate to have the Veterans, with whom we enjoy an outstanding relationship, as our long time charter organization. We conduct routine service projects, events and joint functions together with them as well as with various other community groups in Madison.
As the “camping troop” we hold at least one camping event a month plus various other activities both in the community and throughout the state. With access to fantastic resources such as the Deer Lake Scout reservation, and the Rockland Preserve, both right here in Madison, the troop can hold a variety of activities and events without leaving town.
2014-2015 were great years for the Troop 491! Most recently we have had five of our scouts achieve Eagle Rank with BSA. They were all honored in May at the largest such Eagle Scout Court of Honor in the troop’s history. A total of ten have become Eagle Scouts in the last three years.
We continue to sponsor high adventure trips such as Sea Base 2013, where a team of our scouts sailed the Florida Keys on a 50 footer and Philmont Scout Reservation in Arizona where our scouts endured a wilderness trek in the Summer of 2014. High Adventure trips are routinely scheduled, such as hiking on the Appalachian Trail or canoe trips in the Adirondacks. This is in addition to our annual outings to Camp Sequassen where the scouts enjoy many opportunities to accelerate their rank advancement.
We meet every Monday night at 7:30pm during the school year. We welcome all newcomers and interested parties to attend our meetings and talk with out adult leaders at any time.
